If you haven’t heard already, we’re telling you now. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says that several popular brands of dog food have 70 times (yes, you read that right, 70) the safe level of vitamin D. At least 11 brands are recalling their products.
An FDA spokeswoman said they can’t disclose the name of the manufacturers because it is protected information. They are working with the contract manufacturer to provide a comprehensive list of affected brands, according to a press release.
One of the companies, Nutrisca, said on its website that it received complaints from three pet owners who said their dogs showed vitamin D toxicity and that the excess levels were due to a “formulation error.”
Another brand, Sunshine Mills, said its impacted products were distributed in the U.S. as well as exported to Japan, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Israel, Canada and South Korea.
Contact your veterinarian if your dogs have been eating food from the recalled brands or if they show any symptoms associated with vitamin D toxicity. Symptoms and consequences of excessive vitamin D:

- loss of appetite
- weight loss
- increased thirst
- kidney failure
- death
